Pies, Cakes and Desserts

Ingredients

Directions

3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
3 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon vanilla
vanilla wafers
bananas
In double boiler combine 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt; stir in 2 cups milk.
Cook over boiling water, stirring constantly until thickened.
Cook uncovered for 15 minutes more, stirring occasionally.
Beat 3 egg yolks, gradually stir in hot mixture.
Return to double boiler; cook 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and add vanilla.
Preheat oven to 425°.
Layer 9x13 inch baking dish or casserole with vanilla wafers; add a layer of sliced bananas, then pour in a layer of custard. Repeat, ending with custard.
Beat 3 egg whites until stiff. Gradually add 1/4 cup sugar. Spread on top of custard mixture.
Bake at 425° for 5 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from oven and let set 15 minutes before serving. Some people prefer it served cold.
This is the old "original" recipe.
