1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup boiling water with 1 teaspoon soda
1/3 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup pecans
Cream sugar and butter. Add egg and beat thoroughly. Add flour and salt alternately with water and soda.
Add chopped dates and pecans. Cook in two layer pans at 350° until just done. Cool.
FILLING
Cook sugar, milk, butter and dates until mixture forms a soft ball when a small amount of it is dropped into cold water.
Add nuts and vanilla and stir until smooth. Spread between layers and on top of cooled cake.
